While I Was walking I Heard A Sound

Miya Masaoka- composer

Titled “an a capella work for 3 choirs and 9 soloists”, this marvelous piece is somewhat reminiscent of the pieces on Chanticleer’s Sound in Spirit album a few years back as well as some of Terry Riley’s large ensemble works of the last few years. But it’s very much in a category-or a country-by itself. It uses extended vocal techniques and hockets. It’s more stark than anything I’ve said so far would suggest. But it’s tonal, very much a part of the 21st century and it is very expectation-shattering. Lovely, celestial and disarming, this may be the best choral work of our century so far. Enthusiastically recommended.
