Carlos Bechegas (acoustic flute, voice)
28 short improvisations by a man who has obviously spent a lot of time with his instrument. Extended techniques are employed throughout these pieces, a couple of my favourites are the quiet overtones and the way Bechegas bends notes. It sometimes sounds more like a shakuhachi than a western flute. Some of the titles (and the liner notes) make reference to other master instrumentalists, and their influence is often quite audible, as in E. Parker "Tense" where fast flurries of notes fly by. At times there are two and three sounds happening at once, and it even sounds like a duo in some spots. I was surprised and tickled repeatedly by this CD, and I'd love to hear Carlos Bechegas in company with other players. On a more personal note, the sounds on this disc mixed quite well with the bird songs outside my window. I would recommend this CD to engaged listeners, especially those who don't like flutes. -Jeph Jerman
